Katy and Jason Buhr opened Mountain Dog Outfitters in Georgetown in an effort to combine their love for the outdoors and the needs for their newly adopted Golden Retriever, Luna. The couple, who relocated from Minnesota early last year, also wanted to make it easier for locals and visitors to get out and about in the area with their dogs.

“We were getting Luna and noticed there weren’t many options to buy high-quality dog products around Silver Plume, where we live. We talked about our passion for the outdoors and kind of put the two together, “ Katy said. “We are super excited to be in this community, not only the Clear Creek community, but the dog community. So many people love their dogs so much, and it’s fun to see that when they come in the store.”

Located at 505 Rose St., Mountain Dog Outfitters carries a wide range of supplies, food, toys, leashes, backpacks, harnesses, personalized dog items and gifts. For the more adventure-seeking pups, the store is also an official Ruffwear retailer and carries top-selling items like harnesses, booties and cooling jackets. Look for skijoring equipment and other winter gear once the snow falls. Many items are in stock, but anything can be ordered any time.

MountainDog2The store has become the perfect place for visitors to outfit their dog or replace what they forgot at home, but also for locals to find day-to-day needs like high-quality food, treats, grooming supplies and toys. Katy also makes engraved dog tags and personalized embroidered items, including bandana/scarves.

Mountain Dog Outfitters can also help with the short-term pet-sitting needs of locals and visitors. Owners can leave their dogs to be watched by Katy, and play with Luna, for $10 an hour as they enjoy Georgetown or take turns at a nearby ski hill.

“We know how it can be hard to fully enjoy even the most dog-friendly town when you have your dog because you can’t go in every store or restaurant. In Georgetown’s case, you can’t ride the train or visit our many museums,” Katy said. “We wanted to help solve that… In this town you see so many dogs in cars. We can keep them safe while their people explore.”

The Buhr’s also partner with Charlie’s Place, the Clear Creek/Gilpin County Animal Shelter, to showcase adoptable dogs at the store on Fridays. “One of the best parts of this is the feeling of sending a dog home with their new family,” Katy explained. “I did not expect this part of opening our store and I am so glad that we have started working with Charlie’s Place. It is fun to be able to make someone’s day a little brighter when they can play with a dog as they walk by the store.”

Stop in Mountain Dog Outfitters Thursday-Tuesday or visit their online store at mountaindogoutfitters.com for anything your dog may need to hit the trail or the couch. The store is always evolving and its branded items continue to expand, plus there is always a friendly face, and dog, to greet you.
