Rocky Mountain National Park’s 100th Anniversary is not the only anniversary being celebrated! On Saturday, September 6, visitors of all ages are invited to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Wilderness Act with two fun events. From 10:00 a.m. to noon – booths, demonstrations, games and crafts will take place during the Walk for Wilderness at Lily Lake. Activities will be scattered along the lake shore. The event will be one of hundreds taking place across the country throughout 2014 to recognize the continuing benefits of America’s wilderness legacy. Parking is limited, carpooling is encouraged.

Celebration festivities will continue Saturday evening with the presentation of the film Green Fire – Aldo Leopold and a Land Ethic for our Time at 7:00 p.m. at the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center. This special presentation highlights the first full-length, high-definition documentary film ever made about legendary conservationist Aldo Leopold and his environmental legacy. The film explores the many ways Leopold’s land ethic philosophy lives on in the works of people and organizations all over the world today. Leopold’s vision of a community that cares about both people and land ties all our conservation stories together and offers inspiration and hope for the future.

In 1964, the Wilderness Act was passed protecting just over 9 million acres. This year as we celebrate its 50th birthday, more than 100 million acres of wilderness have been preserved. As a result, families have more opportunities to get outside, communities’ water and air is cleaner and a bit of nature has been saved for future generations to enjoy.
